What are you up to now?:
I graduated from Berklee in 2006, and have been living in Nashville, TN, ever since. I am currently working as a classical singer (Nashville Opera, Nashville Symphony) and music copyist, doing my best to tilt the scales toward becoming a full-time opera singer.
Has HS affected the general trajectory of your life? If so, how?:
It absolutely has. I think it's really easy to get comfortable with a predictable, practical path, and to observe the advice of the people around you to choose the path that leads to stability. My first summer was a turning point in that when I arrived, I was very seriously considering giving up on my passion and my dreams altogether, in favor of a more reasonable path. That first summer flipped the switch back to the "on" position, then broke the switch off. I think that if you put yourself fully into the HS experience, you can't help but be changed for the better, and irreversibly emboldened in the direction of your passion. This is a family that embodies a great deal of passion, and which follows that passion, because to them, there's nothing else worth doing.
What is your favorite HS transportation moment?:
That's almost definitely the time I got pulled over at the Wendy's by the Orleans rotary on our way back from a gig in Provincetown in 2004. I had recently lost (read: inadvertently thrown away, not surrendered) my driver's license, and was driving Micah's van. I have no idea how I didn't get a ticket.
What was your craziest HS tour adventure?:
I'm not sure there were "adventures" so to speak on tour when I was in the group. But I will always remember attending spring tour in Lyme, NH, in April of 2001, right after getting word that I'd gotten into the group. Having studied the existing recordings diligently (Talk About It and On the Beach), I hit the road to see the boys in action, and was blown away. I remember going out to dinner with the guys afterward in Hanover, and talking to Rellz about the final mixes of 110, which was to be released when we hit the Cape (and which, through no effort of my own, was going to constitute a huge chunk of my earnings that first summer). That was a truly amazing trip, and amazing first HS show/tour experience.
What is your favorite HS recording?:
On the Beach is a sentimental favorite, since it was the great white whale for me, that taunted me without ceasing in the year between my first (unsuccessful) audition, and my second (successful) one. And though 110 was mind-blowing, and contains a lot of my favorite recorded pieces in our history, I nevertheless have to name Route 6 here, because of the overall sound and artistry. It was our first fully-studio recorded album, and the song choices, soloists, and overall sound were a tremendous leap forward for the group—a recording totally worthy of the hard work we put into it.
