As I remember it, I convinced MD Brian O'Shaughnessy pretty early on in the summer that I had no vocal range outside of a dull and comfortable moan, so he placed me firmly in the baritone/T2 part. Nice.
Solos:
Feels Like Today, You're Not Alone, and the piccolo solo in Stars and Stripes Forever, which I often cite as my proudest moment.
Best Known For:
Singing all the time, and singing really loud. And playing wiffle ball out back. Also, one time, I knocked 10 solo cups of water over at a party. It was intentional. But it also unintentionally landed entirely on an innocent guy who was walking by. I will forever have this image burned into my brain of him stopping, helplessly looking down at his pants, and then up at me, with a dejected, "Dude," and then walked away. If anybody knows that guy, please apologize for me -- I still feel bad about that.
Now Know For:
Missing reunions, and missing tours.
What are you up to now?:
I do a few things -- I live (6 blocks from the beach) and sing in Los Angeles, doing both studio sessions and live gigs, and I also work as a personal assistant for Al Jarreau, a job for which I travel all over the world and hang out surrounded by jazz music. I love it and the opportunities it affords me.
Has HS affected the general trajectory of your life? If so, how?:
Absolutely -- In addition to making me a better singer and gaining me some of my best friends, having it on my resume helped me get the job which I currently have, that I intend to parlay into a lifelong career in music.
Tell us about your favorite on-stage moment...:
A few of my favorite moments are remarks made behind backs and under breaths so that the audience can't hear, but the inside jokes thrown about every night really keep the show fresh and interesting for the guys performing. My favorite distinct moment was when an older man sitting 5 rows back on the left of the center aisle in Hyannis was moved to tears during a song, looked me in the eye, and said, "Thank you." Those are the moments performers live for, those are the connecting moments that make Hyannis Sound, in its intimate settings, so special.
What is your favorite HS transportation moment?:
Riding back from Liam's in Falmouth, Andy DeLong was driving my car, Snellypants had called shotgun, and I got to sit in the back. It was the first time in a very long time that I got to sit in the back of a convertible, and I remember looking up at the stars, thinking how great everything was at that moment.
Oh, and another Falmouth one -- the group had been booked to sing for a guy right after he proposed to his wife. It was right on the beach--we were requested to be hiding in the brush and then all come together at once and when she turned around, be ready to sing. Brilliant plan, but Andy and I wanted to check it out the scene ahead of time. We arrived, and pulled along the side of the road to park. Upon opening the doors at this picturesque location, we were immediately hit with one of the most foul stenches I'd ever smelled. The man planned to propose directly next to Stinky Swamp.
Also, Jeff Eames backed up directly into my car, which was sitting in park, engine running, my door open, me standing outside and watching him do it, thinking, "No. This is not a problem. He'll stop. He'll st-- He's not stopping." The infamous JEBO, Jeff Eames Back Out.
What was your craziest HS tour adventure?:
It wasn't really a tour, cuz I've never been on a tour, but I flew up from Virginia to sing at Fenway (cuz who wouldn't) and after 2 delayed flights and a missed soundcheck, I had one hope at getting to the stadium, a standby flight. I was just talking about my day with a guy at the gate, a guy who sounded like Will Hunting, and as the die-hard Red Sox fan passengers started to eavesdrop in on the fact that I was in all likelihood going to miss singing the National Anthem at the Sox game, he offered to give up his seat to get me there on time. In the end, a trip of 500 miles came down to literally minutes.
What is your favorite HS recording?:
"I Can't Make You Love Me", live, sung by Micah. Or live "Solsbury Hill". Or "Love Train". Or "She Talks To Angels"
Misses the Most:
Performing for the Cape Crowds, our families on the Cape, and hanging with the bros at Squire.
Patrick Sings-- "Feels Like Today" ('08)
